“Beats the Pants Off Bose. We made a side-by-side comparison of the Cambridge 745i with the Bose Wave Music System II. The Bose is three times as big and costs three times as much, but our unit generated noticeable distortion at high volume levels. The Bose treble was silky and subdued, the Cambridge treble was sparkling, with a lot of presence and definition. The Bose bass had a deeper "throat", but the overall sound was murky. For my money, the Cambridge is worth three times as much as the Bose - just the opposite from current pricing.” James B from Michigan USA.

I have listened to other small units like Bose and Dennon which sound good but the 745 is much better. The other units have better features but for me it all comes down to the sound. “Best available. Can't be beat on sound, function or price. You'll make a mistake if you buy anything else of its genre. Don't even consider a boombox, miniature stereo or dedicated iPOD speakers. Everything can be improved, however, so I'll offer these two suggestions. First, let's add a retractable CD tray so that CDs don't have to be pushed into the unit, with the risk of jamming it by attempting to load multiple CDs when the unit accepts only one (which my 8-year old just did - so do many adults according to tech support - it will cost you $65 plus shipping to have the manufacturer repair the unit). In the alternative, a top door could be added for loading CDs. Second, let's add some cooler clock functions, such as additional alarm sounds and alarms that increase in volume or in how annoying they are the more you hit the snooze button (not that you can't set the alarm to be as loud or as annoying as anyone possibly can tolerate, because you can). Don't let any of the foregoing stop you from buying this device, however, especially if you're careful with your things and are disciplined in awakening. I listened to them all, the [Wave] clock radio, Boston Acoustics clock radio, Polk Audio version, and Tivoli. Only the Tivoli sounded better in my opinion and it was only marginally better, but it costs $999 for the base finish. The reception with the internal antenna is superb, though I do live in a major metropolitan area, so I can't speak to its performance in more remote areas.
